Thanks Oppo for telling me I was being dumb to not go see a doctor, and for the well-wishing. This could have been much worse if I had kept trying to ignore it.
I did something awful to my back/right side just at the bottom of ribs yesterday, I think while shoveling snow, but I didn’t notice the pain until a few hours later
. It seemed like a pulled diaphragm at first, from the location and the “hurts on big inhale” thing.. Anyway it was a little bothersome last night and as a result I slept kinda poorly.
Today I did something really stupid: I picked up a 60lb bag of sand. The muscle has been in a pretty much constant spasm since about noon and ot hurts to bend, rais my arm, or breathe deeply.
Update 1) they gave me some intravenous ibuprophen stuff at the emergency room, and I feel better, not great, but much better... Chest x-ray and blood tests are still waiting, to rule out an embolism, or colapsed lung, or something like that (I highly doubt its a broken rib)..
Update 2) gonna get a CAT scan. I’m positive for the blood test that means I *might* have a blood clot. A positive result is aparently not a solid diagnosis, but a negative IS a solid diagnosis... So, since I am positive they want to take a look before they rule out a pulminary embolism and send me home with pain relevers and muscle relaxants...
Update 3) chest x-ray looks “fine”, no brokem ribs, no colapsed lung. They say it shoud take about an hour to get the CAT scan read, so I wait.... The pain is so much better, I might even try to take a nap. Thanks Chemistry!
Update 4) well i’ll be... Pulmonary Embolism. I get to go on blood thinners for the next three months or so. Thats a bit unexpected.
Update 5) the vicodin wearing off is like an alarm clock :p took another dose and hopefully I can get a couple more hours sleep...

As someone who always waits way too long to get help with injuries, and regrets it... go get checked out. For peace of mind if nothing else.

The vast majority of abdominal muscles are actually located in your back. Short of it is most adults don’t stretch or routinely use muscles like this one under duress in a wide range of motion.
Some years ago I was doing some VERY LIGHT work with a dumbell to counter overbuilding one muscle set. A younger guy with at least as severe of an issue with this opposing muscle insisted, despite wide and near violent protestations to the counter, he was going to try this. On a Sunday night. He did not make it to work Monday or Tuesday. He could not feed himself or overcome the full body pain keeping him bed bound.
It will pass. You will feel it for awhile. You should do some research into how to go about VERY LIGHTLY working on this opposing muscle. The issue is not lack of use insomuch as it has been grown over. It will not hurt anywhere near as bad using it in a prescribed manner which slowly works up to 5 or 10 repetitions.
Take this with a grain of salt since Ye Olde Internet Doctor cannot treat what he can’t examine.

You should probably get checked out now. If it hurts to breathe, you can’t move and had to be helped into bed I think it’s time to see a doctor. It could be a lot more serious than you think and even if it’s not at least you’ll know.

I was rendered completely immobile by back pain a couple of years ago after spending a week bouncing around forest roads. Had to call mom to come rescue me (and if you think that wasn’t embarrassing for a 45-year-old, think again).
I agree with Aesthetics: go see a doctor, any doctor.

Off to the emergency room. It spasm'd again and i got short of breath.

I’m glad your going and wish you the very best. I hope everything is okay and definitely think your doing the right thing by going. Please update us and take care of yourself!

It sounds like similar pain but a different location as when I had a transverse process fracture (L3) after a snowboard incident. It caused a hell of a lot of muscle pain and spasms but not really pain near the break. I had to pick my legs up using my hands to put them in the car because my core just wouldn’t work. (It took me a week to go to the doctor...don’t do th at). Good luck and I hope you get some fast relief.

On a more serious note, I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Dont wait, go. Toughing it out won’t help, if you sleep tonight, you’ll wake up a mess tomorrow.
Take it from a guy that has hurt his back too many times to count : find a reason to take a trip North of the border, and when you do, get a bottle of these
Over the counter Tylenol with methocarbamol in it. If you go to a clinic, the methocarbamol is probably what they'll write you a prescription for. These things are amazing for the situation you're in right now.

if it hurts that bad you could have cracked a rib. a few years ago I injured myself in about the same spot; I was in a rowboat pulling up buoy anchors. I was leaning over the railing, and had to yank up hard to pull an anchor out of the mucky bottom of the lake, and in doing so I forced my torso into the side rail of the boat. with the buckle of my life vest in between my ribs and the boat. I felt a sharp, excruciating pain, went in, and someone else finished the job. A while later I had a physical and told my Dr. about it. I said I thought I tore a muscle, he asked how long it hurt for. I responded “about 2 months” and he said “you probably fractured a rib. a torn muscle heals in weeks, not months.”

Ow. At least my legs and lower parts ar OK... I just can't breathe deeply...

I think breathing might be kind of more important in the grand scheme of things!
(I did just stumble across a whole pile of drugs that would help you...need to remember to dispose of those properly)

I’m pretty solidly in the pulling for you it’s not an embolism camp.

take it easy sir...hope they can nail down a cause. I did work with a lady who cracked a couple ribs just coughing with similar symptoms...

Good that you got it checked out then. My dad had one a few years ago, and seems to have recovered well. Possibly means I’m predisposed as well, as their is a genetic factor. There’s a test, but my doctor thinks there’s not a whole lot you’d do differently knowing the result.

Thank you for making me aware of another random thing that might kill me in some excruciatingly painful way.
Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks. I am not an obvious can didate for a PE, based on my health profile, so they're quite interested in WHY I got one. And yes, it is super painful. Worst pain I've had since the multiple compound fracture of my left arm. I hope I never get to compare it to the renownedly excruciating experience of kidney stones.

My mom compared gall stones to child birth. According to her, the stones were worse. I can now say I know a pain worse than child birth. I can also say they hurt worse than a broken arm.
My father-in-law has had both kidney and gall stones. I’m not sure, but I think they are about equal on the pain scale. It’s just a difference *where* it hurts.
Heal up soon!

Kidney stones fucking suck, I had them in sixth grade after a surgery kept me off my feet for four months. Even so, what you’re describing sounds all kinds of awful, too.
Wishing you a speedy and mostly painless recovery.

Wow scarry stuff especially since my shoulder and neck hurt.
Get well soon.

Dang! Good call on deciding to go to the doctor. Get well soon. We need sheep pics.

Try to time the pain meds so they don’t wear off... if the doseage is every 4 hours and that only gets you through 3 hours, call the doc and ask her/him to bump up the schedule. I had my finger reattached and the pain was very tough to manage until I changed the medication schedule.
Feel better.

First off I hope you are getting more rest than anything. Secondly what sort of long term prognosis did this come with. A few months of pills and insurance co-pays should clear it up and you walk through life knowing you are prone to this?
![]() 11/15/2018 at 16:45 |

Pretty much. They’ll do some additional blood tests, including a genetic test to see if I have a hereditary clotting disorder. I am not a prime candidate for having a PE, so its curious why I got one, and there will be investigations to try to figure it out. B ut basically, take some blood thinners for a few months, and probably go on about my life mostly as normal after that.
